Have you ever looked at someone and thought, “Boy, they look uncomfortable”? Janice Shokrian, our guest blogger, started Tausi Brands because of that one thought. The Inspiration
When I visited my father in memory care, I found him slumped over in his geriatric chair. His pillows had slipped behind his back, and his head had fallen to the side. I was struck by how uncomfortable he looked. I tried in earnest to make him more comfortable by adding another pillow behind his head and trying a travel pillow around his neck. I inadvertently woke him, and he immediately hugged me as the collection of pillows fell to the floor. You can imagine my feelings when the kind caregiver promptly put the pillow behind his head, and I looked down at the dirty floor. I thought, “I need to find a pillow to support my dad’s head and neck, and I can strap it to the chair.”
The Solution
Not finding any solution in the marketplace, I set out to create it—even though my sewing skills are minimal. My children used to give me a three-month lead time for any costume because it took me that long to sew anything! While trying to solve the problem of reliable comfort, I was firm in my belief that people should not have to wear a product to be comfortable.
The final design of Tausi is a modular support system, cradling the user’s head and neck in a U-shaped foam insert. Tausi straps to the back of the chair so it stays in place. It’s a pillowcase, so the user doesn’t have to get accustomed to a new pillow density. Tausi enhances comfort with ergonomic benefits.
It was equally important that Tausi wasn’t a single-use product. My father could use it as lumbar support. While using Tausi for head support, his caregiver could stuff it with his pillow—or if he was sitting on a big La-Z-Boy, he would use Tausi unstuffed.
The Collective
